Robin Jukes-Hughes will be attending Welshpool Camera Club on 27th October 2010 to present a slide show of images from the Shropshire Hills. The slide show will showcase a variety of images from the photographer’s book "Portrait of The  Shropshire Hills", a beautiful book with stunning photographs of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: it’s landscapes, fauna and flora.

I am writing to you in my role as Chair of the Area Council for the Ramblers in Powys.

You may be aware that 2009 was not the best of years for the Ramblers. There was a need for significant cost cutting and staff numbers were reduced in all parts of the organisation, including Ramblers Cymru in Cardiff. We also had some teething problems with a new membership system, which restricted communication, particularly with new members and I hope you will accept my apologies if you were affected.

I am pleased to report that the situation in 2010, our 75^th anniversary year, is looking much healthier. In March, Powys hosted the Welsh Council of Ramblers and it was quite evident that the commitment to promoting walking, protecting rights of way, campaigning for access and defending the countryside, was as strong as ever.

Your Area Council meets regularly to deal with issues affecting Powys as well as maintaining the links with Cardiff and London and our 3 local groups continue to arrange excellent programmes of walks. The smaller team of staff in Cardiff is also doing some great work as can be seen by visiting the web site at www.ramblers.org.uk/wales

Volunteering

As you probably know, volunteers carry out most of the work of the Ramblers and this is certainly the case in Powys. I have enclosed a questionnaire for you to complete and return if there is some aspect of our work you would like to help with.

Membership

Members are the lifeblood of an organisation like ours and there is strength in numbers. I have enclosed a few recruitment leaflets so, if you meet with other likeminded people who might be interested in joining us, perhaps you could pass them on.

Officers checked 23 vehicles on a route popular with motorcyclists and 4×4 drivers in the Elan Valley, near Rhayader.

Two fixed penalty notices were issued for driving using a mobile phone and for no registration plate.

A warning was issued after officers seized a small amount of cannabis.
