Follow up on the Festival of Winter Walks 2017/18

Two weeks on from the end of the Festival of Winter Walks, and the Four Wells Ramblers can look back on their offerings and take-up of walks with some satisfaction.

Coffee break on the Painscastle walk

The first walk was held on Saturday 30th December (an antidote to the excesses of Christmas!), and was a short 5-6 miles from the hamlet of Painscastle.  Despite the somewhat gloomy weather and mud underfoot, 13 people turned up for the walk including a few non-members.  We took in the pretty church of Llanddewi Fach which is only accessible by foot. Following the walk, 16 of us enjoyed a very good meal at the Roast Ox pub in Painscastle.

On New Year’s Day the group offered a choice of walks from the village of Garth. These walks were put on specifically for the Festival of Winter Walks and in addition to the regular programme.  Starting on the same route, 7 of us enjoyed a short 6 miler following the River Irfon to Llangammarch before returning to Garth.  A longer, more strenuous 11 mile hike took a

group of 9 up onto the Epynt before returning via Llangammarch to Garth. Sixteen walkers turned up, including some new faces, on a rather underwhelming day weatherwise. All walkers were treated to tea and cakes at the home of one of the leaders afterwards which rounded off the day nicely.
