Four Wells Group Walk New Years Eve 2011

As part of the Ramblers Winter Walks Festival the Four Wells Group held a New Years Eve walk  that included Aberedw Rocks  and views of the Wye Valley towards Builth Wells.  Twelve walkers including the leader, Derek, braved the damp conditions.  The walk started about 2kms north east of Llandeilo Grabam Church on open common,  heading east and skirting fields to our left we continued to Aberedw Rocks. We dropped below the rocks on a path that unfortunately has been damaged by illegal motor bike use and it was near here we stopped for morning coffee and were rewarded with some blue sky and rainbows.   After the break we continued the circle of the rocks before reaching the main common once again. We were now heading south east and on reaching Glannau Pool we turned NE to Henllyn Pool where we were unfortunate in witnessing two 4 wheel drive vehicles racing across the common ripping up the grassy paths.  Within a short while we were back at the cars where we quickly changed and headed off to a warm fire, a few drinks and a well deserved bar meal at the Wheelwrights in Erwood.

East Radnor Group Walk 28 Dec 2011

On December 28th the group took a short walk, only three miles, starting at Nash Woods near Presteigne. We ascended to a view point with a fine outlook towards Hergest Ridge and the Whimble. As we slowly descended by circling round the hill, the sun brightened the landscape with views over Presteigne — a relaxing post Christmas stroll.

East Radnor Group Walk – 14th Dec 2011

On December 14th the group changed its scheduled walk due to a flooded road. Instead we started in Lloyney, crossed the river (into England) and trekked up the hill from Llanfair Waterdine to Offa’s Dyke. The day was crisp and cold with more and more snow as we ascended. The highlight of the walk were the fabulous views we had of snow covered hills surrounding us. We lunched in the shelter of the Dyke, and continued along a section of Dyke towards our intended start at Spring Hill. This stretch is perhaps the best of the whole path. We turned down to descend via a farm track.

East Radnor Group Walk 7th December 2011

Kevin and Laura led us on a short winter walk around Knucklas and Heyope on December 7th. We started at Knucklas Castle where we were charmed by the many sculptures, ranging from large wooden carvings and stone letter carving to fence posts with a message. It was truly memorable for a bracing wind on the top of Wernygufron Hill, but with clear skies and beautiful views down the Teme and Heyope Valleys. We ended by walking down the Heyope Valley with its picturesque steeple atop St David’s.

Notes on photos:  The photos are by Maggie Egbey. The first photo is of one of the group taking off in the wind on top of Knucklas Castle. The second one is of the group posing around one of the sculptures on the Knucklas Castle Sculpture Trail. The sculpture is called ‘Vertical Work’ and it is  by Tony Hall of Castle Hill Pottery. The third picture is of the group walking (and dodging the wind) on the lumps and bumps of Knucklas Castle.

Welshpool Group Walk – 7th December 2011

On December 4th the Shropshire hills beckoned again when Vic Smith led 12 walkers on a 7½ mile circular route along the ridge from Nipstone Rock, around Rock House outcrop before descending into the valley separating Stiperstones from Linley Hill, the latter being accessed after a short coffee stop. Despite significant tree loss in recent years (due to ‘natural causes’) the tree lined avenue that is the Linley Hill trackway, with its spectacular surrounding hills, remains impressive in all weather and lighting conditions. With the soon to be realised threat of ‘precipitation’ to add to the strong wind, (in fact rain, sleet, hail, snow and more rain!), an early and brief lunch stop was made in the relative shelter of the woods at the bottom of Linley Hill in the company of ‘the carved man’. See image below.)

A short retracing of the route gave access to the footpath heading SE towards the outskirts of Norbury village, before which a northerly, then easterly, footpath was taken leading to a quiet lane leading to the trackway over Norbury Hill thence re-joining the top of the Linley Hill track. This was followed NE, a short deviation being taken to view the earthwork thought to be a Roman signal-station – of limited function in the conditions by then prevailing! The open hillside descent to Cold Hill Farm was made to access the final section of lane before the steep ascent by the footpath and track from Knolls Cottage to the shelter of the waiting cars at Nipstone.

Howard & Debbie Wright will lead the Group’s last full walk of the year on Sunday 18th in the Acton Scott area. Starting from the Acton Scott churchyard (OS grid reference SO454893) at 10am, the walk is an ‘easy to moderate’ grade 8 mile circular route with some stiles and one ascent, taking in views of Ragleth Hill and The Long Mynd. The walk uses permissive paths, pastures and green lanes and a disused railway line. Meet 9am at Church Street car park, Welshpool, where shared transport may be available, or at the start of the walk. For further information, please contact 01686 688837. All welcome but no dogs on the walk please.
